Fort Smith Housing Authority Announces Transition for Boardwalk Apartments Residents to Expanded Housing Assistance
Fort Smith, AR — [May 05, 2025] — The Fort Smith Housing Authority (FSHA) has announced a major transition for residents of the Boardwalk Apartments, prompted by the expiration of a long-standing contract between the property and the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). The HUD Moderate Rehabilitation contract, which has provided project-based rental assistance at Boardwalk Apartments for several decades, will conclude on June 30, 2025.
This change affects 55 families currently living at Boardwalk Apartments, all of whom will be offered tenant-based rental assistance to continue receiving housing support.
The expiration of the contract has created an opportunity for FSHA to better serve these families by offering more flexible and sustainable housing solutions. As a result, all eligible tenants at Boardwalk Apartments will be provided with tenant-based Housing Choice Vouchers (HCVs)—commonly known as "Section 8 vouchers"—to assist them in relocating to a new residence of their choosing.
“While changes like these can be challenging, they also open the door to improved housing options,” said Mitch Minnick, President & CEO of the Fort Smith Housing Authority. “Our highest priority is ensuring that every resident has access to decent, safe, and affordable housing, and this transition allows us to meet that goal more effectively and equitably.”
FSHA is working directly with each household to ensure a smooth and supported relocation process. Residents will be issued vouchers, provided with a list of participating landlords throughout Sebastian County, and offered individual counseling to assist them in securing new homes. Moves are expected to be completed no later than August 1, 2025, ensuring no disruption to housing assistance.
The Fort Smith Housing Authority remains committed to strengthening housing stability in our community and will continue to work with local partners and stakeholders to expand access to affordable housing opportunities.
